Have You Seen These Watermelons ?

If you came to this post, and I thank you for doing so, you are thinking why a post on watermelons?

Good question. Because sometimes I use my blog to prove something IS Not photoshopped.

I came across this entry on a couple of blogs. Japan is creating square watermelons. I , along with others, dismissed it instantly as photoshopped.

 No, the photos are genuine.

Watermelons will flower and start producing fruit. The baby watermelons are put in special boxes or braces. They grow into the spaces and the shape of their containers. Watermelons are not really melons. Watermelons are more closely related to the cucumber and the pumpkin. They grow on the grounds as vines.

Very popular in Japan , they are gaining in popularity. They are not genetically altered, they are not GMO’s. However , some complain they are harvested too early. And they are expensive because growing them requires a lot of work.

And not just watermelons . This novel trend is being applied to other fruits.

Some people protest that foods should not be modified or distorted but others claim that selectively breeding fruit and foods have already been going on for centuries. Watermelons today do not look as our ancestors knew them.

Are there photos of watermelons photoshopped ?

Yes, there is a hoax that started in 2007.

You could buy Moonmelons that are blue or purple. Hoaxsters made them seem legit by selling them off on sites like Amazon or  Ebay. They sold packets of colored watermelon seeds. And they did not sell cheap. But the watermelons did not grow looking like this.

Remember the scene in Iron Man 2 when Stark was drunk and a party girl brought out a watermelon? Not used to nightclubs, I thought it was there to cut up and eat. No ,that was not the reason. Watermelon are 92 percent water . The bartender cuts a hole, inserts a vodka bottle and the watermelon absorbs the vodka. So, now it is a vodka slushie for customers.

But they will not be using this next watermelon. Labeled the Densuke Watermelon, they are grown on the northern island Hokkaido of Japan. The rind is pure black . They are rare , expensive and highly sought after. In 2008, one weighed 17 pounds and sold for six thousand dollars.

There is a second black watermelon that is not as expensive. But it is valued as a Heritage Food . Heritage foods are livestock or seeds that were used in earlier times but are no longer popular. But efforts are made to conserve and restore the older breeds and food plants. These Heritage Watermelons are not black but are a very dark green. Also known as Sugar Baby or Icebox Watermelons.

Lastly, enjoy this video of this adorable guy from Sweden enjoying his watermelon .
