Cats have always been on social media and the Internet. People are fascinated with cats. So, when huge topiary felines appeared in 2010, they went viral around the world. Topiary cats have been done before but not like these. Where are they? Who created them?
The United Kingdom was getting invaded by these mysterious topiary animals. Not in isolated areas but near mansions and highly visited areas.
A short while later reports came in of people who lived in these regions, and there were no huge green topiary cats. Then who was doing them?
The mystery solved. The artist of these surreal magical cats is Richard Saunders. Already an artist he worked in art advertising. He was at Buckingham and his attention was caught by some bushes that reminded him of a sleeping cat. He photoshopped in his cat, a Russian Blue named Tolly.
He did a few more clearly writing his name. The first few were for fun using his Russian Blue cat as a model. But Internet trolls cropped out his signature and put them out as real. Trolls will seize any chance to steal from photo shoppers and art sites to fool people and create fake cryptids and images.
Saunders realized the interest and media commotion and has now created The Topiary Cat. Each art piece is firmly stamped with the Topiary Cat logo.
Some cat fans said they felt disappointment. People, at least for a while, were enchanted with the idea of giant topiary cats stationed throughout Britain.
Richard Saunders and his art has achieved cult status. People have fallen in love with these magical green felines. Prints, posters, calendars. Photobooks and interviews. The Topiary Cat Facebook with millions of hits.
Sadly, Tolly passed away in 2016. Saunders has a new Russian Blue who also models his creations.
But the artist states firmly that his new cat is not a replacement. “ Tolly is the Topiary Cat, and the Topiary Cat is immortal.”
